Information Commissioner issues updated Victorian Protective Data Security Standards
Following the 2018 submissions of the first Protective Data Security Plans (PDSP) by Victorian public sector organisations, OVIC’s Information Security Unit (ISU) completed a comprehensive review of the Victorian Protective Data Security Framework and Standards.
As part of this review, the ISU consulted widely with stakeholders and updated the Standards to present an easier to understand set of requirements. Updates to the Standards have resulted in the simpler Victorian Protective Data Security Standards v2.0 (the Standards V2.0).
In October 2019 the Standards V2.0 were approved by the Special Minister of State, the Honourable Gavin Jennings MLC, and were issued by the Information Commissioner, Sven Bluemmel.
The Standards have now been tabled in Parliament and were published in the Government Gazette, bringing them into full effect.
Agencies that have protective data security obligations under Part 4 of the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 (Vic) are now required to adhere to these updated Standards, and submit a PDSP to OVIC by the end of August 2020.
OVIC is hosting a launch event to coincide with the release of the updated Standards on Tuesday 12 November. To register your interest in this event please see here.
