OVIC and the ADM+S launch GenAI Concepts: A curated index for understanding AI terms
The Office of the Victorian Information Commissioner (OVIC) and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S) have launched GenAI Concepts, an online resource designed to explain fundamental concepts and terms related to Generative AI.
GenAI Concepts covers over 40 terms, unlocking the technical, operational, and regulatory aspects of AI systems. It is an accessible tool for individuals and organisations seeking to better understand the fundamental ideas, technologies, and risks behind Generative AI.
From ‘prompt and prompt engineering’, ‘machine learning’, ‘large language models (LLMs)’, to ‘privacy’ and ‘human oversight’, GenAI Concepts dives into the core elements of AI systems while offering insights into their operations, associated risks, and existing regulations.
With accessible descriptions, vivid examples, and engaging visuals, GenAI Concepts will be a valuable and inclusive resource designed to accommodate people with varying levels of digital literacy and interests in this emerging field.
ADM+S researchers Dr Fan Yang, Dr Jake Goldenfein from the University of Melbourne have been leading the project.
Professor Goldenfein said, “We’ve created the Generative AI concepts web page with the hope that users at different levels of resources and sophistication will be able to use this tool to understand fundamental ideas and fundamental complexities associated with these emerging automated decision making systems.
“This tool is designed for users to gain an understanding of fundamental ideas and complexities associated with these emerging automated decision making systems”.
“It’s not just how these systems work or the commercial hype, but really some of the complexities they introduce around data flows around questions of open source versus proprietary questions around transparency and security and different ways that these tools can be deployed and the supply chains that they invoke.”
