Consultation opens for the revision of the Victorian Protective Data Security Standards (VPDSS)

OVIC has officially commenced the consultation period on the draft Victorian Protective Data Security Standards (Standards).

Version 1.0 of the Standards were first issued in 2016 under Parts 4 and 5 of the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014.

The Standards aim to provide Victorian government organisations with criteria to consistently apply risk-based practices to manage the security of public sector information.

To assess the effectiveness of the Victorian Protective Data Security Framework (Framework), which includes the Standards, OVIC’s Information Security Unit (ISU) reviewed a broad sample set of the high-level Protective Data Security Plans as part of 2018 agency reporting obligations. OVIC also commissioned an independent review to inform any areas of the Framework and Standards for revision.

The new draft Standards have taken recommendations from the independent review and the ISU’s findings and aim to simplify, consolidate, remove duplication and add new elements where gaps have been identified.

OVIC welcomes feedback on the draft Standards and will accept comments until Friday 9 August 2019.

To provide feedback and for more information please visit our VPDSS Consultation page.
