Welcome and introduction

  • The Assistant Commissioner, Privacy and Assurance, welcomed the members of the Privacy Roundtable and performed the acknowledgment of country.

OVIC Updates

The Assistant Commissioner, Policy noted:

  • Privacy Awareness Week 2021 will run from Monday 3 May to Friday 7 May with theme Make Privacy a Priority. OVIC will be publishing collateral and holding events via Microsoft Teams due to COVID-19 and venue restrictions.
  • OVIC is hosting an event in collaboration with its Youth Advisory Group and ySafe for the younger members of the general public targeted at information on image based abuse, sextortion, staying safe on social media, digital footprints and privacy.
  • OVIC published an Information and Sharing and Privacy Guide and thanked members of the Roundtable for their feedback during the consultation process.
  • OVIC has published Understanding Culturally Diverse Privacy – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People’s Perspectives highlight considerations for the Victorian Public Sector when handling ATSI person’s personal information.
  • OVIC has commenced development of an eLearning module for Privacy Impact Assessments.
  • The next Victorian Privacy Network Meeting will be held on 24 March 2021 at 1:00 PM – 3:30 PM.

The Manager, Privacy Guidance:

  • Provided a high level summary of statistics relating to the handling of privacy complaints.
  • Noted OVIC will increasingly provide preliminary views on complaints to complainants or respondents. This is aimed at providing an expert view on how the Information Privacy Principles may apply, so that complainants or respondents can make informed decisions about how to resolve the complaint.

The Senior Privacy Guidance Officer noted:

  • OVIC is continuing to develop its a Privacy Officer Toolkit which is aimed at providing key resources that describe and help support the role of a privacy officer and thanked members of the roundtable for providing their feedback during the consultation phase.

Agency representative updates

  • Agency representatives discussed key challenges, trends and initiatives in their relevant areas.
