Overview of privacy
Read about privacy and our role, and find links to resources for Victorian public sector organisations and individuals.
What is privacy?
When Victorian public sector organisations collect, use, or disclose personal information, they must do so in accordance with the Information Privacy Principles in the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 (Vic). In Victoria, individuals have privacy rights which limit what personal information is collected, and how it is used and disclosed.
What is OVIC's role in protecting privacy?
Individuals who suspect their privacy rights have been breached by a Victorian public sector organisation can make a complaint to OVIC. OVIC also conducts investigations into potential privacy breaches by Victorian public sector organisations, and provides guidance to help organisations better understand their obligations.
