This guide seeks to summarise the key benefits, issues and risks relating to the adoption of cloud computing. In a cloud computing context, ‘cloud’ is a metaphor for the Internet, with ‘cloud computing’ used to describe the way various computing components – such as networks, servers, storage facilities, services and applications – are supplied to an organisation by a cloud provider, or providers, via the Internet. In turn, an organisation does not have to deploy its own networks, servers, storage centres and/or applications if cloud computing is utilised.
