Lightning Talk: Engaging with consumers and technology to create a more efficient, sustainable (and friendly!) FOI Service

On 26 September 2023, as part of International Access to Information Day (IAID) 2023 celebrations, Laura Hartmann, General Counsel, Grampians Health, will deliver a virtual lightning talk providing learnings from Grampians Health’s recent efforts to redesign its freedom of information (FOI) processes. This talk will cover how Grampians Health has used audience research, user testing and plain language communication to reshape its template FOI documents and applicant experience. Laura will also discuss leveraging process mapping and technology to improve the overall FOI process.

Laura is a general counsel and legal designer based in regional Victoria. She is passionate about creating in-house legal services that people love. Laura uses design methodologies to re-examine everything we think we know about in-house legal teams- from the way we write and speak, to the processes that underpin service delivery. She is currently building a legal service from the ground up at Grampians Health.  Laura holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Master of Public and International Law from the University of Melbourne. She is the legal design portfolio lead for the Legal Technology and Innovation Committee for the Association of Corporate Counsel and a member of the Health Law Committee for the Law Institute of Victoria.
