IAS: Health information

Secrecy provisions, releasing information to relatives and third parties, and release both under and outside the FOI Act

A special session with a focus on health sector agencies.

Each month OVIC hosts an Information Access Series (IAS) webinar for FOI practitioners in the VPS. The next IAS will be held on 23 November from 12pm – 1pm.

Health information is sensitive and subject to complex overlapping legislation including different types of secrecy provisions and privacy principles. It is also often sought not by the individual, but by their parent, guardian, relative or other representative. Some legal concepts like “senior next of kin” may operate differently in FOI medical treatment. Even when sought by the individual, there may be reasons not to release information because it may harm the individual.

This presentation will review the legislative framework and consider business impediments to help you navigate release of health information both under FOI and administratively outside of FOI.

The session will run for 60 minutes with time for Q&A.
